Apache Storm Wins InfoWorld Bossie 2014 Award

A panel of reviewers made up of InfoWorld Test Center editors and industry experts selected Apache Storm as a winner for 2014’s InfoWorld Bossie award. The “Bossies” identify the Best of Open Source Software every year. These Bossie awards celebrate game-changing open source software projects in different domains, and the panel selected Apache Storm in the Big Data Tools category.

bossie_tezThis is the first year that a streaming computation framework has been selected in the Big Data category, which is a tribute to Apache Storm’s broad industry adoption and versatility. Stream processing has exploded onto the scene for real-time, big data computation as more and more enterprises recognize the need for instant answers from their analytics applications. Apache Storm is the clear leader in that respect.

For example, the rapid adoption of Storm as an infrastructure project at Yahoo! began with a successful project for homepage personalization and then went on with the Flickr team for photo auto-tagging. Many more companies are realizing the same value by adding Storm to their Modern Data Architectures (MDAs) with Apache Hadoop YARN as their architectural center.

With the explosion of additional data sources in recent years, many Apache Hadoop users recognize the necessity to process data in real-time while also maintaining traditional batch and interactive data workloads. Apache Storm fills that real-time role. Through YARN, the data operating system of Hadoop, Storm tightly integrates with many of the tools and technologies commonly found in the Hadoop ecosystem.

In the past year, Storm progressed from an Apache Incubator project to a Top Level Project. Graduation to a top-level project gives Apache Hadoop users the confidence that they can adopt Apache Storm knowing that it’s backed by a robust, sustainable developer community and by the governance framework and processes of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF).
