Using Data to Protect Warfighters on the Battlefield

The Joint Improvised Threat Defeat Organization (JIDO) is a combat support organization of the U.S. Department of Defense. JIDO's core mission is to "counter improvised threats with tactical responsiveness and anticipatory acquisition in support of combatant commanders' efforts to prepare for, and adapt to, battlefield surprise."

  • Reduced operations and management costs by 20 percent
  • Consolidated around 1000 data feeds from disparate sources around the world
  • Shifted resources from stack maintenance to mission-oriented innovation
  • Enabled next-generation analytics, AI, machine learning, improved DevOps

Challenge

Data plays a significant role in the business, helping to support and maintain safety of warfighters and helping them react in more informed ways. JIDO was having to focus too much on day-to-day operations and maintaining the basic capabilities of the stack, which was taking its focus away from building analytics to answer questions.

Solução

JIDO turned to Hortonworks and HDP for its Hadoop infrastructure, helping to lessen the workload of day-to-day operations.

Results

Going with Hortonworks and HDP has helped reduce costs by 20% and bring in data from 1,000 data feeds from disparate sources. This gets the necessary data out to the warfighter in a more efficient manner, equipping them with the answers they need to make decisions.

Leo Garciga

Chief Technology Officer, JIDO

What we found was that we were spending more of our time just maintaining the stack together. Going with Hortonworks has taken some of that work that we'd been doing, from a day-to-day operations and basic capability area, knocking our costs down by 20%.
